A triumphant return?

September 6th, 2011 by Jasdar

Well here we are again. Sitting at the desk wasting what will probably be referred to as my best years, writing about a video game. I know I think Eve is so much more too. Don’t get me wrong what with the countless people to chat with, buckets full of tears to collect and whatnot. But there it is, its a game. Albeit a most amazing, capturing, mesmerizing game of all games. But a game none the less. So with that out of the way I push forward. (I felt that little touch with reality was a needed precursor to what was to come )

In this segment I talk about my most fave of all things, The Drake. I know its a bane of alot of pilots and the crutch of many more but hey lets be fair. What ship is better suited to run the constant Lvl 5 and come in under 70mil isk. I ask, no I plead for you to tell me! I only bring this up because I was vehemently questioned 2 weeks ago about my intent to once again push into another Lvl 5. Now I know I have touched on this in previous post but this is different. See before I wouldn’t bother to pay alot of attention to the mission guides and would have quite a few very close calls(and some right on the bullseye) resulting in what could only be referred to as a complete fustercluck of the huge proportion. But after slowing down and reading the instructions(comes in handy from time to time) I realize I can run my lvl 5′s solo. Completely, without RR. Yes even the nuet tower missions, Angels, Sansha, what have you.

Its what I have been doin those long months since my last post. I have actually gotten good enough to plex 2 ,count them 2 toons, doin it. Now I know there are those out there still saying a Battlecruiser can’t tank a lvl 5, and to you I say your wrong, damn wrong, way wrong and scared to try. I ask what is so special about a carrier or a gazillion isk BS to do the mish if for some reason you lose you may end up on the local news as Man/Woman/Child goes on insane killing spree! More news at 11. I mean seriously, If I get popped by the mish I’m out 70mil, if I get popped by assholes I’m out 70mil. Hell the cost of two ships alone still comes in under the cost of some modules put on these damn expensive ships. And it can’t be an efficiency thing cause guess what a 20 minute blitz is still a 20 minute blitz regardless of the ship you brought.

I will be posting a Fraps in the coming weeks of me running a mish from both the Serpentis and the Sansha Factions. I will show agent mish type and all relevant information so as to not leave room for doubts. I hope all struggling Lvl 4 pilots trying to gather the ridiculous amount of isk needed for that carrier or that faction BS will see how soon they can start making money and enjoying the game again. Because lets be honest, missioning is only slightly better than mining, and everyone hates mining. So until then freaks fly safe ,fight hard.

A hesitant return

Its been 6 months since I was last able to log in and play Eve, due to RL issues beyond my control. But 3 days ago I was able to finally return to the game. I was amazed at how much I had forgotten and how little had actually changed. I know there were updates to PI and a few ship classes, but overall nothing seemed improved. I was also impressed with the captive memory of all the pilots I had flown with, they seemed to remember me even if I didn’t remember them. I don’t think it had anything to do with my popularity I believe its more of a captive mindset condition. Once in Eve your gone from the outside world. I do want to take the moment to thank the pilots that have made my return both pleasant and uncomplicated. (they know who they are) The one thing that has proven to be the most difficult thing to adjust to is the subtle power shifts. The areas we once flew in are now occupied and unfriendly and the areas we once avoided are now gathering points. Alliance members have shifted or departed all together, and enemies are now blues. But it is this diversity that has brought me back after 6 months of RL interaction and I hope to find that comfortable niche to fill again as I plan my next 2yrs of game time. So remember friends “fly safe, fight hard”.

Damn Whiners

Before typing this I had just finished reading the forum on the new changes coming to EVE. I for one do not have a bitch with losing the learning skills as they are giving back the points I spent on them. I feel that it’s a fair enough trade off, considering it wouldn’t change if I felt differently. Which brings me to my reasoning for this particular blog. When I finished reading there were 50+ pages of rant, bitches and rather helpful discussion. The one that caught me the most was the huge ass complaint department formed by what had to be a garbage bag full of puss pilots with nothing better to do with their time than complain. Not to mention the full idiocy of the fact that if it made it to a discussion forum and not a “Hey whatta ya think ” forum that there was nothing really to be done. I am equally surprised at the amount of players that continually complain about every little change stating that its “the last straw” and that they aren’t going to ever play again. If that was the case then their need into the latest changes need not even be printed as they won’t be around to see the changes take place, since their not going to re-sub anyways. What I find equally funny is a good handful of said same pilots have been bitching and making the same demanding statements for the last 5-6 expansion/patches or updates. To me it’s a little like cry wolf by now isn’t it. I mean really if your going to bitch that much and can’t come to grips with the changes then by all means you should leave. And in my opinion the quieter your exit the better. Do you really think that your absence will stop anyone in their tracks and elicit a tear. I have witnessed changes that I thought were less than flattering to the game(remember the speed nerf) and yet I recognize that overall EVE is still the most interesting and involved MMORPG in existence(just 1 pilots opinion of course) and at the end of the month I have no issues paying my sub. Of course their are changes I don’t like and yes the forums are for just such collection of whining bitches and children. But for all that is good if your gonna threaten to leave then please just do so and impress us with your commitment, not just your ability to whine endlessly. Cause remember its the whiners that bring most of these hated changes to the game. the real pilots just wish CCP would leave it well enough alone.

The less loved drone

September 25th, 2010 by Jasdar

It has to be the most unsupported, unappreciated drone in the game. The ECM drone. From the bays of an Ishkur with a swarm of Hornet EC-300′s to the Hangars of the Dominix with a full flight of Wasp EC-900. The ECM drone has time and time again saved and frustrated many a pilot I’ve flown with. They are probably my favorite drone to use to balance a PvP op or solo fight. A lot of pilots fill the holds with increased DPS drones Hobgoblins, Hammerheads, Ogres to name a few. But what happens when you lose you’re lock and your only DPS becomes the drones? Negating you’re targets ability to bring their main weapons to bear is often the only thing needed to tip the scales in battle. They have specific ships designed to do just this that require a lifetime of skill training and a bucket of isk. Whereas a hangar full of ECM drones comes cheap and readily available to bring your target to their knees ans win you the fight. And at the very least as you watch your shield then armor and hull start to bleed you can drop a flight of Vespa EC-600, wait for the golden moment then break the hell out! Leaving your enemy screaming at you in local as you wipe the sweat from your brow professing your love for those oh so cheap drones. This isn’t news to the experienced drone pilot and shouldn’t be, but I still run across pilots in combat that wonder how the hell they lost when they were so sure victory was theirs. Keep it in mind pilots, ECM for your fight is only a drone bay away, and should never be overlooked.

Close!

“Its so damn boring out here!” I think to myself. I Check over comms and scanning one more time. The Dastryns System had that effect though. It wasn’t protected by active Concorde patrols and being one of the quickest traveling routes into Syndicate space it was a less than hospitable place. If pilots meandered there it usually meant they were up to no good. Which was exactly why I was there.

I had been piloting Battlecruiser Class ships for The federation against the Angel Cartel for so long that when the opportunity to change duties and ships came along, I was more than a little enthused. It gets a little unrelenting when your battling entire fleets on team Patrol with only one combat ship and a remote repair escort. That kind of work can make a person a little edgy and tense. So when a change of ship and duty presented itself I was on board.

It has been 2 weeks since I was implemented into this ship. An “Enyo”. It was a Gallente Frigate Class Assault Ship, and it was a welcomed change of pace. It was built by Roden Shipyards with the latest innovations from the Serpentis Corporation Facilities. Just the improved 1MN propulsion upgrade gave the ship a 15% increase in defense and efficiency. Making it that much harder to hit, and with the newest armor repair modules installed and manned it was a formidable tank. But for all its abilities and crew members, I still felt tense and wary.

Maybe you just get used to a ship when your a capsuler. They “grow” on you so to speak. As I daydream the alarm sounds, snapping me from my thoughts are the reports from comms telling me the gate is active. I open feed to external vid and see the flash of blue. Insticntively I activate damage control and align to planet. I’m not scared i’m just no fan of surprises. If this ends up being something I can’t handle I’m out. I watch intently waiting as the jump gate timer counts down the cloak cycle. It takes almost 20 seconds for the jumper and the destination to merge. It’s like that particular section of space has to slide back into time.

And then it appears!! A Minmatar Frigate, the Rifter!!. I zoom the video feed into the ship and watch as first he materializes and then turns towards my ship. Instantly I set up orbit. All the while watching the gate for any further activity. Just then Concorde security rating for this capsuler comes in!! He’s wanted by Concorde and on the Free to fire list. This is what I took the transfer for!! My sensors indicate the ship is attempting to gain target lock, I answer likewise. I immediately open with a Corelli Class Warp scramble to keep him from retreating. The Tech 2 nuetron blasters rip thru his shield defenses in 2 volleys. But the bastards fast, damn fast, He leaves my guns range in no time and initiates a webifier on the enyo. Max speed has just reduced beyond consideration. I check the ships capacitor array, and make comms with repair systems.

The little bastard is making peacemeal of my shields as he leaves my optimal and enters his. Crew is screaming bloody murder as shields drop below 10%. I inform them to calm down and watch the armor status. Having Serpentis upgrades should prove useful in the next few moments. And they do!! The rifters projectile ammo starts making dents in the armor and just as quickly the peacful green lighting begins as the new Coreli armor repper we had installed makes quick work of any damage. All that is left now is too wait and see If i can trick up his orbit.

I bring ship to full stop, straining the ability of even the new repper to keep up and it happens! He has left himself open and his orbit swings him too close. I punch the afterburner, regain scramble and open fire remembering the Hobgoblin II drone I was carrying and quickly set it loose. Little fuckers are violent and I find myself thinking I should probably plan an upgrade if I make it out of this. The Neutron blasters once again tear into him like hes made of paper (which is an upgrade for Minmatar) and then scanners start screaming. There’s a Strategic class cruiser falling out of warp 35 Kilometers off to my left between me and the damn gate.
I run ship type scan and quickly recognize it!!! A “Loki” the little fucker had backup. Quickly planning my escape route I take a chance and barrel towards the loki catching flak fire all the way in. I set up to a tight orbit and light the afterburners.

The incoming slows as my armor repper picks up but it may be too late. Noticing my readouts I see shields 0% Armor 0% hull 15%. Holy shit !!! Burning Close and panicked I notice that there is still incoming damage from somewhere, quickly glancing at vid to see if Loki turrets are firing I notice the damn rifter come back around. In my haste to get under gun of the Loki I had completely forgotten about him. Damnit!! Thats how capsulers die, I tell myself. I regain gun control and bring them to bear on the rifter. He may not have noticed my targeting and hoping against that I wait to fire. I check my overview to see if the hobgoblin had made it and it hadn’t. Expendable soldiers they are. I wait just a few seconds more and I engage the heat on the guns and afterburner.Closer now 7k,just a little more!! Closer 5K,almost.As he approaches 3k and opens fire I immediately engage afterburner and blaze directly for him. Guns screaming their sweet death song as his shields fall in one fail action followed by armor that only momentarily acts as if it will hold. Im burning towards gate now hoping to not come from under the Loki’s guns when I realize the rifter is on fire and hauling ass. Seems his afterburner has held up and is taking him from my range. I approach gate and look back at the rifter burning away as the warp lock broke. I notice his 15% hull that he now leaves with as I activate the gate and jump from system I think to myself “next time I’ll bring backup!”

It just aint right, but its fair!!

Last time thru I bitched at the horrible beast that is lag. Well it would seem that karma and lag are both fair and horrible. Picture if you will cruising thru low-sec in your AF looking for the “fair fight”(HA!!) When you decide enough is enough and your ship is bad-ass and your going 0.0. Now picture the feeling of surprise when you finally get the balls to hit the jump button into the great unknown and behold, sitting ever so quaintly, an AF exactly like yours. Not what do you do ? Do you simply fly on away congratulating yourself for avoiding another “Captain Obvious” trap? Or do you go to it with guns blazing hoping the Gods will favor you this day?! Well I for one am blind to the obvious ,which quite unnecessarily is blatantly obvious to anyone who knows me. So I open fire and pray. Now this is where Karma bitch slaps lag and shit get interesting. Now after a few volleys and shields dropping like prom dresses. I realize not only is my opponent not returning fire, he’s not moving at all. Now being the chivalrous ass that I am, I figure the only way to make amends now…..is to heat the guns and make this quick. So I make haste with the heat and continue to oven-roast this poor bastard noting the whole time how”I’m glad it wasn’t me ” and laughing maniacally to no one in particular. And wouldn’t you know it just as the blue pop goes the whole gate becomes enveloped by a swarm of pilots like its give shit free day. Now at this time I have the kill, the loot, and the twisted satisfaction that lag is universal and with that I jump and haul ass off to some distant star in some farfukaway system. Thanking out loud the whole time ” I’m glad it wasn’t me “

It’s Thursday. It’s late. And after a bitch of a day at the terminal I am finally free to move about the universe. Now I have spent weeks and countless millions perfecting what I thought had been a competent dualbox setup to run my level 5 missions. And for the most part they were….until last night. Now see theres this fucking thing referred to as lag. Which I have learned is usually followed by insane amounts of cursing and/or crying. Now I know that lag isnt new and despite all efforts from our gods also isn’t going away anytime soon. But after several upgrades on my part I thought it was a thing of the past for me. Wrong. You know the only thing worse than catching lag is catching lag while primaried. There I was in Fate of Angels whiling away my time when I get the faint question from my wingman. “Are you warped?,Can you get out” Now im thinking i’m ok here and I say as much.  Well a moment passes and the question is posed again. This time with a greater sense of urgency. Now I realize theres a problem. Controls arent responding image isnt changing, shit has become mobile and seems to be searching for a fan.

Its these moments that you feel time “Slow Down” so to speak. Nothing takes as long as death. There I am one moment tanking a Lvl 5 running a drake/ferox setup. the next moment I hear the unwanted gasp from my wingman as I all to painfully realize they know something I dont. Two ships, tons of mods, and bucket load of shame and emberassment as your fabled “permatank” takes a nosedive due to something as unneccessary as lag. I could go on about it(and in TS I probably will} but alas I have ships to build and shit to buy. SO until the next time kids. Fly safe fight hard.
